Hello there 👋🏽
Glad you found my little corner on the internet.

This little site is some kind of a journal of me trying to get things done. I have the problem, that I have dozens if not hundreds of ideas of cool things to do, build, create, write, etc. But in recent times, I have been quite bad at turning these ideas into reality. I would do all the tings a little bit, but nothing with focus and for longer amounts of time. It is like trying to cook 10 seperate dishes on a single stove. I fry the potatoes for a moment, boil the eggs half the time, cook the beans too short, melt the butter a bit, and the potatoes are already turning cold again.. Nothing turns out really well and my kitchen is a mess. This is me trying to do things.

Because I really want to do cool and interesting things (and not just watch people do interesting things on Youtube), I want to improve this situation. For this I will be trying out different things. One of these things is this website. But lets look at it a bit closer.

The Background

The Problem

My problem is I usually oscillate between two things: doing many things unfocused and superficially or doing one thing too deep. Or simpler: Remaining only on the surface vs getting lost inside the tunnel.

I am very got at envisioning, having many and creative ideas and imagining cool tings. At any time, I will usually have dozends of ideas flying around my head of cool things I could do, try or learn. Due to this, I usually do many things simultaneously, not really biting my teeth deeply into one idea, but rather scratching the surface of many.

Whenever I get around doing something more intensely and more focused, I have something I call the “moving goalpost syndrome”. This means, that I will subconsciously move the goal further and further the more I progress because I have high expectations, a lot of ideas, am overly engaged… So much so, that I forget other life responsibilities. Uff, it already sounds exhausting just writing this.

Another problem I have, is that I do not really celebrate things I did get done in the past. If I actually take a moment and reflect (which I do not often do), there are actually a lot of things that I did achieve.

I really want to get better at doing things, entering the tunnel safely and under control.

A solution?

Watching a short documentary, I stumbled upon the concept of definition of done. What a simple, yet powerful idea for a person in my shoes! The idea is to define when something is done - before you start! So I take a little time to sit down, think about what I actually want to achieve (instead of a vague idea that gets more concrete and difficult the more I progress). Then, future me can go back and see if I am on the right way. Iterating on this, I came up with the notion of the pragmatic definition of done (pDoD), which just forces me to keep it more simple than I would usually do.

This little website is my way of trying to get better at this. Not only do I force myself to define my projects, when they are done and make them pragmatic, also it being public somehow gives me the impression that I have an audience that holds me accountable. I am not really expecting anyone to really read this, but the illusion already helps. And it creates this little corner in the internet that documents all the things that I did managed to do! So future me can go on here and smile while browsing through the nice projects.

So far for now.

The characteristics of a projects

A project for the purpose of this blog should be something that requires extended time and willpower. So it might requrie work spread over multiple days and have parts that are not enjoyable and be out of my comfort zone.

Inspiration

I take inspiration from a lot of private people around me, but also from some people on the internet. Here are some Youtube Channels, I particularly like:

All of them share that they are creative, creating, and doing a lot of interesting projects and seem to be good project-based working. That is why I find them inspiring.
